How many times can you relaunch?
As many times as it takes to get it right or better or more meaningful or matter.
As many times as is needed.
We are not scared to make mistakes, because this is how we learn and improve and make it better and more meaningful.
We are not scared to learn from our mistakes.
We are not scared to say we made a mistake.
We are not scared to adapt and change and relaunch.
We are proud to say - we are bringing you the better, the improved, the more meaningful relaunch of our website and blogs and newsletter on the 1st of September 2016.
Sign up for the newsletter and get all the latest news and links in your inbox - once a week - on a Thursday.
We are excited and we cannot wait to share all we have done with you.
The AkuYa Team
When A.W. Milne died the tribe members of the New Hebrides in the South Pacific, with whom he lived for thirty-five years, buried him in the middle of their village and inscribed this epitaph on his tombstone:
When he came there was no light.
When he left there was no darkness.
We stuck to what we knew best for a long time.
A very... long... time...
This learnership thing looked scary and we were not sure that it was worth the bother. Maybe. we were just not ready to make a change and adapt. or maybe we did not have all the facts. Whatever the reason, we resisted. We argued against it. We said never.
Yes, you guessed it. Your mom probably also taught you: "Never say Never!"
Well, we had to eat humble pie.
Kabelo joined the team and she asked: "Why? Why are we not doing learnerships?"
It is expensive.
It is admin intensive.
The companies are not crazy about it... we think... (We thought wrong.)
Then she asked us: "What is our long term training vision?"
We said: "We want to change lives - not just train - but through training change lives. Be true to our name and bring light into darkness, hope into hopelessness. Be the link in a chain of partners making a difference - a real difference. Not a say so difference. Or think so difference. Or numbers difference. A real difference. Change people's lives for ever - better - difference.
And she said: "Well?"
That was the start of our journey into the world of learnerships.
Yes, learnerships have a nasty rap. I spoke to a high end manager at one of the leading cellular networks in the country and she was absolutely SCATHING about learnerships. About how much money they have invested in learnerships and how little return on investment there was in terms of the human capital invested in and invested IN. And my heart broke...
We tendered for a national learnership initiative and the bottom line - the cheapest price for the most learners - was the victorious winner. A sausage machine investment. A how many can we fit into one group, how little can we do with them, what are the ABSOLUTE minimum requirements to show them as competent and how much profit can be made from this was the winner. And my heart broke...
Failure for the outcomes of the tender.
Failure for the learners who think this is their opportunity for hope.
Failure for everybody who will get burned by a bad learnership investment and implementation strategy.
BUT, we discovered, learnership is an amazing opportunity if done right.
it is a win-win if all the dots are connected.
it is a game changer for the training provider, the business who buys into it, the community where the learners come from and MOST of all for the learners who walk out the other side - out of the darkness of hopelessness, into the light of hope.
That is why we ate humble pie and realised that the day of never has arrived. It was now and we are loving what we can do with a simple learnership.
More importantly - our learners are loving what they can do after the simple learnership.
He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.
I read this quote and thought of our youth. The estimated 16 MILLION of them who will not be able to find employment.
I read this quote and I thought how lost must lost be if you have your whole life ahead of you and almost no hope of making something of it.
I found this quote in a book called "Living Boldly" by Mary Anne Radmacher and although I loved every page of the book, I wondered how do we motivate our young people to live a BOLD LIFE - to go out there and make something from it, if you do not know where to start.
We can bear almost anything if we have a why. If we have hope. if we can see a light at the end of the tunnel. Even if we CANNOT see the light, but know it is there and we will reach it, we have hope.
We can handle any how to get to the end, if we have the hope, the believe that when we get to the end of the tunnel, we WILL find the light.
And I wondered...
What hope is there for our youth?
What why do they have to live for?
How do you motivate a nation of which almost 50% is under the age of 35 and 80% of them will not find a job?
We give them the skills to make their own job - to create employment - to be entrepreneurs.
Well, you are probably thinking - that sounds wonderful, but a bit optimistic and idealistic!
Do we have a choice?
We do not.
It is not just their future at stake. It is my future and your future. It is my kids and your kids' future. It is our whole country's future.
I cannot reach 16 million young people.
You cannot reach 16 million young people.
The government cannot reach 16 million young people - it is too late. This is the 16 million citizens between age of 18 and 35 that have been through the school system already. They may or may not get to a tertiary institution.
Then what is the answer?
One young person at a time.
I can help one or two or more.
So can you.
Together we can reach a a little hub of learners.
Every hub adds up and makes more that is given hope - a why to live for.
Then we trust them to do the how to get to the end of the tunnel - the light.
Naive - most probably!
But then, we are a training company.
This is what we do.
Create little hubs.
Offer learnerships and partnerships and learning.
We promote entrepreneurship and we believe that with the right training people can find both their soul and their path forward. If we did not believe in training and that what we do makes a difference, then we should find something else to do.
Luckily, we believe - because we have seen the results.
TOGETHER WE SHINE BRIGHTER!
Join our tribes - and showcase what you have to offer.
Take off - don't wait - don't stand still.
Even if the take off is bumpy and not as perfect as you would like it to be. Make mistakes, learn from them, improve and get better at it.
We have made so many mistakes at AkukhanYa that we sometimes wonder at our own sanity, but each mistakes clarifies our vision more and more - makes it shine brighter.
In a space of a few months Akukhanya has taken off in new and amazing ways. One minute we were still working on becoming the best AET training company in South Africa and the next... we are zooming off to...
