The last ten years has definitely not been smooth sailing. We started out as an accreditation & organisational capacity building consultancy - hence the name AkukhanYa Educational Consulting. A couple of years as a consultancy and an ex client asked if we would manage their adult training programme, which lead to a formal registered company in 2008.
Now, ten years later this company has gone from a small start-up to a training company targeting a very specific market. We have tried many things, made HUGE mistakes and also had some GREAT successes, which has refined and redefined our vision until we found our specific niche in education.
Our niche being, education and life skills to disadvantaged youth, providing them a springboard from which to reach dreams - real life dreams - hope - self respect - dignity.
It did not happen overnight, in fact...you know that feeling when you slog and you slog and things just does not fit and then one day suddenly you do one thing and everything falls into place, and makes sense? That is the point we have reached with AkukhanYa. We worked on so many different things, but we just could not bring them all together and then we started with our first learnership programme and SUDDENLY it all made sense.
AkukhanYa is a Small Giant - by CHOICE. We do not want to be the solution to all South Africans' educational needs. AkukhanYa works with one group or area at a time and build a strong self-sustainable Hub in that area. We address the needs of that HUB through the development of secondary school and out of school youth at a basic level - literacy, numeracy, computer literacy, entrepreneurial skills, building life skills and exposing the learners to knowledge, skills and experiences most of the western world take for granted.
All of our passions now makes sense:
A love of reading needs to be planted and nurtured, giving the youth another key for self development and not being dependent on outside forces for everything. A book club has been established and is growing, called 1@aTime. One book at a time, then another, then another with the goal of one book a quarter in the first year, then one a month in the second year and finally one a week in the third year.
Coffea is a coffee shop, computer centre, catering business in its first developmental shoes - the brainchild of the first learnership group. This will be the 1st official business starting out of this Hub. Something we are obvioulsy super excited about.
Marina's Pearls @A will be the online shop for 1440, Ali's Travels, Fu-Za, Jireh Fountain & Karabo-inc, as well as any enterprises or co-ops that grow out of the Fu-Za @A Hubs.
A lot that still needs to be done. A HUGE dream, but exciting and motivating and worth every minute and sweat that will go into it. We cannot wait to look back in another ten years and see where this journey has taken us and the people traveling with us.
Do date, so many people were part of this journey and to name them all would take a looong time, but three organisations need special mention:
May we honour everyone who has helped us on this journey so far and everyone we are still to meet on the journey forward.
